SYNOPSIS
The Mongol ruler Tamerlane (1336–1405) — Tamerlano in Italian — holds captive the Turkish emir Bajazet, whose country he has conquered. Bajazet’s daughter, Asteria, begs Tamerlano to release her father, which the tyrant is prepared to do, since he hopes thus to win Asteria for himself, even though he is actually engaged to Irene, Princess of Trebizond. Asteria, for her part, is already engaged to the Greek prince Andronico, who is in Tamerlano's service. Numerous conflicts and much anguish arise from this situation, especially as Tamerlano does not balk at offering Irene to Andronico in exchange for Asteria. He would then release Bajazet, but Bajazet indignantly rejects such an offer. This crisis produces misunderstandings between the lovers but, at the decisive moment, Asteria thrusts herself in front of her father and is thereupon thrown into the dungeon, too. To preserve his honour and that of his daughter, Bajazet poisons himself. Thwarted, Tamerlano allows Asteria and Andronico to marry and takes for himself Irene, who has come through it all with dignity. A moderate yet optimistic final chorus then brings events to their conclusion.
