SYNOPSIS
CD 1 [1] Ouverture
Act One
Queen Partenope dedicates her new city. ‘Eurimene’ arrives at her court, claiming to have been shipwrecked. The Queen’s favourite suitor, Arsace, recognises ‘Eurimene’ as his former betrothed Rosmira, whom he had abandoned for Partenope. The shy Armindo becomes friends with ‘Eurimene’, and when Armindo confides that he loves Partenope, ‘Eurimene’ gladly offers him advice. Arsace confronts Rosmira, and claims he still loves her, although she indignantly rejects him and insists that he swear a vow to keep her true identity secret.
Partenope stays faithful to Arsace after a veiled confession by Armindo that he loves her. ‘Eurimene’ attempts to embarrass Arsace in front of Partenope, who resolutely reaffirms her loyalty to Arsace. Emilio, the soldierly Prince of neighbouring Cuma, also loves Partenope, but she disdainfully refuses his arrogant proposal of marriage. Partenope declares war against Emilio, and takes charge of her army amidst the bickering of her supporters who wish to command the army in battle in her stead. Arsace becomes concerned that ‘Eurimene’ is going to fight for Partenope’s army, but he cannot publicly explain his reasons. Armindo worries that ‘Eurimene’ might be another rival suitor for Panenope’s love, but is reassured that ‘Eurimene’ is hunting a different kind of prey.
Act Two
Emilio and Panenope rally their troops. During the ensuing battle Armindo rescues Partenope from danger. Arsace saves ‘Eurimene’ and captures Emilio. Much to Emilio’s amazement, ‘Eurimene’ claims all credit for the victory, and Arsace says nothing to contradict it. Reviled by Partenope and placed in chains, Emilio bitterly complains about his misfortune in love and war. Upon Partenope’s return to court, ‘Eurimene’ repeatedly insults the silent Arsace, and is placed under arrest.
Armindo lets Panenope realise that he loves her. Arsace persuades Partenope to set ‘Eurimene’ free, but his vow prevents him from giving an adequate explanation for his request. ‘Eurimene’ is nevertheless freed, and asks Armindo to organise an audience with the Queen in which a secret will be revealed. Left alone with Arsace, Rosmira scorns him, unaware that he has brought about her release. Furiously conflicting emotions drive Arsace to the brink of madness.

Act Three
Arsace dreads what Rosmira might tell Partenope. ‘Eurimene’ announces Arsace’s betrayal of Rosmira, and describes her broken heart. Partenope angrily insists that
the honour of both deceived wornen must he satisfied by single combat between Arsace and ‘Eurimene’. Arsace's desperation to avoid this is misinterpreted as cowardice by Emilio and Armindo, whom ‘Eurimene’ then baffles by stoutly defending the outcast former favourite. Emilio recognises a kindred spirit in the forsaken Arsace, and attempts to encourage him. Arsace begs Rosmira for forgiveness, and insists that his love for her is renewed, but Rosmira thirsts for revenge and cruelly rejects him. Arsace’s despair increases. Partenope requites Armindo’s steadfast love, and Armindo rejoices.
Arsace seeks respite, and while he is asleep Rosmira confesses that she still loves him. Pastenope discovers them together, but Rosmira conceals her true identity. Arsace awakes, is abruptly persecuted by both women, and is left enraged at the cruelty of love. Armindo and Emilio are reconciled in friendship; the latter confesses to his rival that he still loves Partenope, but now realises that true nobility is only found in a calm, contented heart. The field of combat is prepared for ‘Eurimene’ and Arsace. Emilio and Armindo present them with their swords and urge them to fight, but Arsace insists he will only fight if both combatants are stripped naked to the waist. All agree that ‘Eurimene’ must comply, so Rosmira is forced to choose what to reveal. She confesses her real identity. Partenope confirms Armindo as her chosen husband, reunites Arsace and Rosmira, forgives Emilio, and observes that ‘Content in Love did never reign, / Without an intermingled Pain’. All the characters rejoice at the prospect of a double wedding.
