SYNOPSIS
The action takes place in Naples, circa 1790.
CD 1
1 Overture
Act One
2 Two young officers, Ferrando and Guglielmo, are having a discussion about the constancy of women with a cynical, ageing man-of-the-world named Don Alfonso. Ferrando says that his fiancée, Dorabella, is as faithful as she is beautiful; Guglielmo declares the same of his fiancée, Fiordiligi, who is Dorabella’s sister. 3–5 Don Alfonso listens but insists the girls will be untrue. Enraged at this slur, the two officers accept Don Alfonso’s offer to wager one hundred gold pieces that he can prove his point in twenty-four hours, providing they follow his instructions without question.
A garden overlooking the Bay of Naples. 6–7 Fiordiligi and Dorabella are gazing at portraits of their lovers in the lockets they wear. They are expecting their officers, 8–9 but instead Don Alfonso arrives and tells them that Ferrando and Guglielmo have been ordered off to war. 10 –19 A touching scene of farewell is interrupted by a drumroll, the arrival of a boat to take the two men, and the appearance of a regiment of soldiers and crowd of villagers singing of the glories of military life. Ferrando and Guglielmo enter the boat; it moves away, and the soldiers and villagers go off.
20–22 The sisters’ boudoir. Their maid, Despina, is awaiting her mistresses with their breakfast tray. They enter, distraught. 23 When Despina learns the reason for the hysteria, she advises the girls to console themselves with new lovers. In righteous indignation Fiordiligi and Dorabella leave the room.
CD 2 1 Don Alfonso enters and bribes Despina to help him introduce two young “Albanian” suitors to her mistresses. 2–6 Despina does not recognize Ferrando and Guglielmo in their disguise and, assured they are wealthy, supports their suit. When Fiordiligi and Dorabella return, they are terrified to see strange men in their house; the two “Albanians” try to make love to the girls, but they will have none of it, and they walk out into the garden. 7–10 The men are delighted, but Don Alfonso wams them the wager is not yet won.
11 Fiordiligi and Dorabella are discussing their plight when the two “Albanians” stagger in, pretending to have poisoned themselves because of their hopeless passion. While Despina and Don Alfonso run for a doctor, the two sisters relent somewhat and minister to the men. 12 Despina returns in the disguise of a doctor, and after much mumbo jumbo with a giant magnet, she cures the “Albanians”. The two officers renew their amorous tactics, but the girls manage to remain steadfast.
Act Two
13 Despina urges Fiordiligi and Dorabella to relent toward their “Albanian” swains, 14 and she gives them some worldly advice on love-making. 15 Alone, the sisters discuss the pros and cons of a flirtation and finally decide it will do no harm; 16 Dorabella selects Guglielmo, leaving Ferrando to Fiordiligi.
17–18 In the garden, the “Albanians” have arranged a serenade for the girls. 19 –20 Encouraged by Don Alfonso and Despina, the men pair off with the sisters. 21 –22 Fiordiligi and Ferrando go for a stroll; Guglielmo declares his love to Dorabella and finally gets her to accept a heart and takes in return the portrait of Ferrando. CD 3 1–4 As they go off, Ferrando and Fiordiligi return; having made little headway, Ferrando leaves. 5–9 When later the men compare notes, Guglielmo is reassured, but Ferrando is enraged when he sees his portrait.
10–11 In the house, Dorabella tells Despina she has lost her heart, and Despina congratulates her. Fiordiligi enters in a state; she admits she is in love but is filled with misgivings.
12 Left alone, Fiordiligi plots a reunion with their fiancés at the front; she orders Despina to get two uniforms and two swords. 13 Ferrando, who has been listening outside the door, rushes in, threatening suicide. The distraught Fiordiligi finally admits she loves him, and they leave together. 14 –15 Guglielmo, who has also been listening, now vents his anger against his fiancée. When Ferrando returns, the two men determine to punish the girls for their faithlessness, but Don Alfonso soothes them and urges them to marry their fiancées, for after all, he says, “così fan tutte” — all women behave thus. 16 Despina enters and announces to the “Albanians” that her mistresses have decided to marry them.
17 After directing preparations for a double wedding, Despina and Don Alfonso leave. 18 The two couples enter, 19 and then Don Alfonso comes in with a notary — Despina, again in disguise. The marriage contract has just been signed by Fiordiligi and Dorabella when the military chorus is heard again; Don Alfonso announces to the girls that their fiancés are returning. In panic the sisters push their new husbands out, and Don Alfonso pushes the disguised Despina into another room.
20 Ferrando and Guglielmo reappear in uniform and feign anger when they pick up the marriage contract, which Don Alfonso has carefully dropped near them, and see the signatures of their fiancées. The sisters admit their guilt and blame Don Alfonso and Despina for leading them astray. Don Alfonso reveals all the disguises and unites the proper lovers. All then join in praise of reason.
